Digipak Final Draft

I have designed a digipak for my album that uses one picture to follow from the front round to the back allowing so that if someone looks at the back and the front at the same time it looks like one long picture. On the inside I have more images from the music video to show the consistency of the campaign.

Magazine Advert

I have produced my final magazine advert for my music video. It includes a picture of one of the scenes in the music video to keep it consistent and make viewers able to associate it to the music video.

Storyboards

I have made storyboards to give a better idea of what will happen in the music video. As I do not have the best drawing in the world, and I should warn anyone who decides to look, I have used highlighters to show the different people and actors needed in each shot I want.

Mise-En-Scene and Actor Casting

For the narrative section of the music video the I will play the artist who needs to wear casual clothes what are unbranded as it fits more with the genre of the music. He will wear jeans with a T-shirt and a an open, short sleeve, button shirt. For the other actor in the narrative section of the video I have got the help of my friend Marianne who lives close by meaning that I can sort out a day to be filming with her. She will need to wear a dark leather jacket and dark shoes for most of the video but need to be wearing casual clothes for one scene. As i will be in some of the shots myself and won't be able to operate the camera whilst I am acting I have got the help of my brother for parts of the narrative section of the music video.

The reason I need to play the artist is because I want to go up a mountain in Scotland to film looking out among the world and no one else is able to join me for the long journey. I am going to be in scotland anyway over the holidays so can work out a day that I can make the hour and a half walk to film. The other part of the narrative section of the video needs to be played on guitar and I have a couple of friends who can play guitar to help me with this part or I can try it myself. I have a guitar in my house so i just need to find someone and sort out a date and a time for filming so i can get everything sorted.

9 Shot Analysis - Feel Good Inc - Gorillaz

At the very beginning of the music video we see the name of the song on a tower as it zooms in towards the camera. this shows the band in their usual animation music video style. The band normally add a narrative side to their videos and this is no exception with an industrial kind of atmosphere.

This shot shows an animated guitarist playing a bass guitar. Even though this is an animation, it creates the idea that the band play their own instruments which make them look more of a performing rock band. The shot also includes two women who make the guitarist and band look popular and more important. The way everything is shaded to make the band member stand out and be the only coloured person.

This is one of my favourite shots even though it only last for a second or two. It shows the animated lead singer holding megaphone and coughing dust out the other end. It shows the extent of the darkness in the scene and how sad and gloomy the tower he is trapped in appear.

This shot is from the first time we hear the chorus and the acoustic guitar being strummed. The scene is much lighter and seems like a dream even more so because we can see him faded into the shot allowing us to make a connection between the singer and this dreamlike scene. This also follows Goodwin's idea of the relationship with the brighter scene and the happier music being played.

This shot shows a featured artist, De La Soul, with the singer of Gorillaz, 2D. De La Soul is on a big screen making them seem more important and evil in the dark tower scene, like the antagonist of the music video, trapping 2D.

This is the first time in the video the viewer sees that the high key windmill scene is not a dream, but is another contrasting place. we also see a new band member who we realise is the one playing the acoustic guitar in the choruses. The camera shot is a high angle looking up at the island which gives the impression of the height and that it is flying effortlessly through the clouds.

This wide shot shows the point where the dark, evil tower scene meets the bright, innocent windmill scene. It shows the extreme differences between the two character in the way that one has complete freedom even with the little land they have and the other is trapped in his own huge, lonely creation. This also shows one of the songs main themes which is “intellectual freedom”. Intellectual freedom is the concept that everyone has a right to have their own opinion and in the music video this is what 2D is trap from.

This wide shot follow the theory of the notion of looking and even though it is an animation it still follows the rule. The notion of the looking is the third rule of Andrew Goodwin’s theory of music videos. In this case it shows the artist being slightly seductive though the animation.

The music video ends the same way it started with the singer, 2D, sitting back in the chair he started in, inside the dark prison like tower. This makes us feel sorry for the artist who is stuck where he doesn’t want to be and can’t seem to be able to leave.

Music Video Analysis - Are You Gonna Be My Girl - Jet

Are you gonna to be my girl was released in 2003 in Australian band, Jet's debut album, "Get Born". The song falls into the hard rock category and was the band's first single. It was the most successful song by Jet and made it into numerous song charts. It got to number 29 on "Billboard Hot 100". Number 7 on "Mainstream Rock Tracks" and number 3 on "Modern Rock Tracks".

The video is entirely performance so that people get to see and know the band with the instruments they play. The video is in a black and white colour palette which makes it look more old fashioned and makes it more in-line with the dark, colourless filming used in most rock genre songs.

Through many long and mid-shots of the entire band and individual members we see that their clothes aren't eccentric and that they are dressed in casual jackets and bootcut jeans. This makes them look more urban and young, helping the connection with their younger target audience.

Throughout the song there are numerous points where the instruments are stopped and the vocals carry on. When this happens there is always a shot shown of the lead singer singing in a close-up. This lets the viewers see how connected he is to his music and singing.

The song follows Goodwin's Theory of the relation between the music and the visuals in the way that the ink effects in the the video build up towards the first chorus and throughout the rest of the song. There is also a relation with the visuals and the lyrics by the outline of the women in the video linking with the title of the songs.

Music Video Analysis - Fell in Love With A Girl - The White Stripes

The White Stripes were formed in 1997. Fell in love with a girl was released in 2001 and was their second single release and one of the songs in their third album. The video was directed by Michel Gondry and hosts a conceptional performance based around Lego.

The music video was a big success and won three awards at the 2002 MTV video music awards and nominated for video of the year no falling just short.

The artists are shown in their normal colours of black, white and red showing viewer that they are still the same and keeping to their ways the whole video is done in Lego, a clever unique ideas, which allows the normal activities like swimming and running to look at exciting though there are no people in the video there is still a lot of performance with the conceptional qualities presented by the Lego.

The video is illustrative of the music and shows the band as different to other bands and that they stand out above the crowd. Examples of the illustrative ways of the video is when the guitar enters and when the drums enter as there are parts of the video, like a countdown and an equaliser display. The videos target audience is fairly broad as Lego is aimed to children and adults up to the age of 35 with a few older people who may be nostalgic about Lego. The video is also illustrative of the lyrics as there is a boy and girl love kind of theme to the video.

The use of Lego in the music video is counter typical of the music genre and makes the artists look creative throughout the entire video.

Most music videos in the punk and rock genre show mainly performance with small parts or conceptual filming all in the low-key lighting and a dark colour palette. This video stands out with the higher key lighting and a brighter colour pallets with the Lego in enhancing that further.

Even though the two band members are not actually seen in the music video some of the Lego animations in the video are detailed enough for the viewer to know what the artists looked like. This will help advertise them as performing artists as well as creative music producers. The band have made the video show normal everyday activities like swimming to show that, even though they are different, they can relate to viewers in their lifestyle and the fast paced editing sticks with both the music in the video and the genre of music.

Filming Locaions

To get all the shots and scenes I want, I will need several different locations. I have made a montage of all the different places to film.

Picture 1 is the mountain that the performance aspect of the film will be. I want this because it can easily be told apart from the narrative sections of the music video. being on a mountain might cause problems as it take and hour and a half to get to the filming location. Mountains also have the potential to get quite windy and blow over equipment but also add effect to the performance of the video.

Pictures 2 show the location of the building that overlooks the park. This is a good place because the building has apartments making it easy to access and overlook the park. It gives a good location for the scene I want to film here. The building also looks like a generic town building adding to the urban effect.

Pictures 3 are the for the scene where tracking device will be used. These location are good because they a local and I can get to them to film at anytime and have good lighting from street and interior lights.

Picture 4 is of the cola machine are for the poison scene where a drink will be poisoned and drank. This is a good place as it is local and i have permission from the owner that I can use it if there are few customers in the shop.

Picture 5 is the road I plan to use for the street scene. This is good because it is local and there are paths on both sides of the road that I can use. There are outside sources that can interfere with my filming and may make it take longer to the footage correct to the way I want it.

Picture 6 is where the first and last scene with the thrown projectile will be used. This location will be sufficient as it has a post that something can be stuck to and is a large open area that can easily have shots from many angles used for it.

Props and Equipment

Binoculars
I have been able to find some old binoculars that i can use. i chose these out of the others I could choose because they are big, bulky and create a more dramatic impression on camera. It shows the user as more of a professional who knows what they are doing and is well prepared.

Rope and Chair
I found some light green fibre rope and a folding chair that I can use. This gives somewhere for the man to be tied to once the stalker has captured him.

Poison for Drink
For the poison, I got a bottle of blue die and stick a printed a toxic label onto the bottle. For the drink I can buy any bottle drink from a shop on the day I film. This is good because it looks real because of the sticker I made for it. I wanted the poisen to look as realistic and noticable as posible for the viewers of the video so i used blue as opposed to red or any other colour that I had avalible to me.

Tracking Device
For the tracking device I wanted, I decided to get an old broken iPhone. I took off the screen and took out the components on the inside of it. I then made my own circuit to go on the inside so that and LED would flash when the button its pressed. I couldn't get a power source strong enough that was small enough to fit on the inside of the case, so I got battery cables that go to a 9v battery on the outside that can be hidden with the holders hand in the scene. For this I wanted it to make something that look professional but did exactly what I wanted it to do whet it was used.

Throwing Knife
I will need a throwing knife or some kind of projectile weapon that can be used. It looks professional and as it is plastic it can be throw without fear of killing someone or causing injury.

These are all the props and equipment I will need to take with me to film when i go to film (not including the chair which is a bit big to fit into the frame).
