Music Video Analysis - Fell in Love With A Girl - The White Stripes

The White Stripes were formed in 1997. Fell in love with a girl was released in 2001 and was their second single release and one of the songs in their third album. The video was directed by Michel Gondry and hosts a conceptional performance based around Lego.

The music video was a big success and won three awards at the 2002 MTV video music awards and nominated for video of the year no falling just short.

The artists are shown in their normal colours of black, white and red showing viewer that they are still the same and keeping to their ways the whole video is done in Lego, a clever unique ideas, which allows the normal activities like swimming and running to look at exciting though there are no people in the video there is still a lot of performance with the conceptional qualities presented by the Lego.

The video is illustrative of the music and shows the band as different to other bands and that they stand out above the crowd. Examples of the illustrative ways of the video is when the guitar enters and when the drums enter as there are parts of the video, like a countdown and an equaliser display. The videos target audience is fairly broad as Lego is aimed to children and adults up to the age of 35 with a few older people who may be nostalgic about Lego. The video is also illustrative of the lyrics as there is a boy and girl love kind of theme to the video.

The use of Lego in the music video is counter typical of the music genre and makes the artists look creative throughout the entire video.

Most music videos in the punk and rock genre show mainly performance with small parts or conceptual filming all in the low-key lighting and a dark colour palette. This video stands out with the higher key lighting and a brighter colour pallets with the Lego in enhancing that further.

Even though the two band members are not actually seen in the music video some of the Lego animations in the video are detailed enough for the viewer to know what the artists looked like. This will help advertise them as performing artists as well as creative music producers. The band have made the video show normal everyday activities like swimming to show that, even though they are different, they can relate to viewers in their lifestyle and the fast paced editing sticks with both the music in the video and the genre of music.
